Montana State (10-13, 4-7) notched 37 points off of Sacramento State’s (6-19, 4-8) 27 miscues.
“One of the differences in the game is that we were converting off their turnovers,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We had moments were we didn’t finish well, but overall we had good energy.”
Both squads were hampered by foul trouble in the opening stanza, while battling to a 34-all tie at intermission. The opening half featured seven lead changes.
“We had to sit Nubia (Garcia) and Katie (Bussey) for most of the half, and the fact that it was tied going into the break was a positive,” Binford said.
In the second stanza, the Bobcats held a 53-49 advantage before rattling off a 12-3 run to stake a 65-52 margin with 6:19 left following a pair of Sarah Strand free throws. Sacramento State didn’t challenge down the stretch.
Montana State’s Erica Perry led five Bobcats in double-figures with 16 points, while Strand added 15, Garcia 13, Bussey 11 and Mara Hoefer 10.
Sacramento State held a 28-18 advantage in rebounding in the first period, but the Bobcats closed the margin to 44-42 at the final buzzer.
MSU was led under the glass by Jenny Heringer with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Strand added a career-high ten boards to notch her first double-double as a Bobcat.
The Hornets were paced by Charday Hunt, who registered a game-high 19 points.
Montana State will travel to Idaho State on Thursday.
