Montana State Continues Three-Game Home Stand

The Montana State basketball team will continue its current three-game home stand when it hosts Northern Arizona on Thursday and Sacramento State on Saturday evening. Both games are crucial as the Bobcats dive into the second half of its Big Sky slate. Both visitors are 4-6 in league action, with Montana State 1/2 game back at 3-6. Sacramento State will play at Montana on Thursday before making the trek down I-90 to Bozeman. Both Northern Arizona and Sacramento State beat Montana State in January. Sac State won in overtime (88-86) and NAU took a 15-point win (76-61).
That Was The Week That Was:
Montana posted a 67-60 win over the Bobcats on Saturday. MSU built an early 22-15 lead on a Nubia Garcia jumper. The Bobcats led 30-27 at the break. MSU was sparked in the half by Garcia and Katie Bussey. Each posted nine points, including three treys by Bussey. UM opened the second half on an 8-2 run. The ‘Cats answered with six consecutive points, including a 3-pointer by Erica Perry for a 38-35 lead. MSU went cold, going scoreless the next 4:30 as Montana built a 46-38 margin. Again, MSU responded with a 10-1 run to reclaim the lead at 48-47 with 8:13 left. The lead changed hands five times, before a UM basket at 5:34 gave the Lady Griz the lead for good. The ’Cats trailed 60-59 with 1:48 left on a Jenny Heringer jumper, but the UM converted 7-of-8 free throws to secure the win. MSU had three players in double-figures led by Garcia with 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Also in double-digits were Bussey 15 and Perry 10. Bussey ended the contest hitting five-of-nine three-pointers. UM held a commanding edge in free throws connecting on 24-of-32, while MSU hit just six-of-nine attempts.
Dialing Long Distance:
Montana State has converted 138 3-pointers this season. As a team, the Bobcats are shooting 36 percent from beyond the arc. Six MSU players have tallied 14 treys or better on the year- led by Jenny Heringer with 31 3-pointers and followed by Katie Bussey 28, Sarah Strand 26, Anne Phippard 19, Lyndi Seidensticker 19 and Erica Perry 14.
Turnin’ It Around:
Montana State had the 11th best turnaround in the nation at the NCAA Division I from 2005-06 to 06-07, improving 8.5 games from its 3-23 mark during the 2005-06 campaign to 13-16 in 06-07. Last year, the Bobcats moved up again posting its first winning season under Tricia Binford’s tutelage with an 18-13 mark and an 11-5 Big Sky slate. The 2007-08 season culminated with a trip to the league title game for the first time since 2003.
To Catch A Thief:
Last year, Montana State finished second in the Big Sky in steals per game led by Erica Perry, who ended the season ranked 30th in the nation at 2.8 per contest. So far this winter, MSU is averaging 7.38 per game.
Bobcat Player of the Week:
Junior Nubia Garcia was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her effort against the University of Montana on Saturday afternoon. The 6-foot-2 native of Chihuahua, Mexico posted a team-high 17 points and hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds. The double-double was her fourth of the season. For the game, Garcia converted six-of-ten from the field and was five-of-seven from the free throw line. In addition, she added one assist and one blocked shot in 24 minutes of action. Garcia’s one block against the Lady Griz was her 93rd of her career, moving her into second on MSU’s all-time blocks chart. She also ranks 10th all-time in rebounding.
