Bobcat Women's Tennis Team Hosts Two; Men Travel to Colorado

The Montana State women’s tennis team will host a pair of matches this weekend in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. MSU will face Idaho, Friday, Feb. 13 at 3 p.m., and will meet Wyoming, Sunday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m. The Montana State men’s team will make their first appearance of the the 2009 season when they open at the Air Force Academy, Feb. 13 at 12 p.m. Following its match with the Falcons, the Bobcats will open their Big Sky Conference slate at Northern Colorado, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. MSU will conclude its Colorado road swing, playing No. 48 Denver, Sunday, Feb. 15 at 12 p.m.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State women’s team went 1-2 on its Texas road trip. In its first match, the Bobcats dropped a 4-3 decision to Houston. After losing the double point, MSU responded with wins at No. 1, 2 and 3 singles. Leading the way for MSU was Stephanie Jasper, who posted a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lucy Forward. On Friday, Sam Houston State defeated MSU 5-2. Earning points for the ‘Cats were Ali Griffin and Lisa Clark. Montana State captured its only win of the weekend with a 4-3 decision over Louisiana-Monroe. For the first time on the road this winter, the Bobcats swept all three doubles spots for the first point, then received singles victories from Jasper, Missy Harris and McKenzie Hilmer to secure the win.
Welcome Back:
The Montana State’s men’s team tuned-up for its first match of the year with its annual Alumni gala. The contest ended in a 6-6 decision. Earning wins in singles play were Pawel Turzanski, Jakub Dybala, Esteban Ferrero, Myles Perkins and Alberto Fuentes.
Jasper Ranked:
Montana State’s No. 1 singles player Stephanie Jasper was ranked 30th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region preseason poll. The ranking is a first for a MSU women’s player.
Fab Frosh:
Freshman Missy Harris, a graduate of Billings Senior High School, is 6-1 on the season in singles action. Her only loss was a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Sam Houston State’s Giorgia Pozzan. As a prepster, Harris captured four Montana Class AA singles titles, en route to posting a perfect 73-0 four-year mark, including never dropping a set.
‘Cat Chat:
Junior transfer Corey Smith is ranked 82nd in the ITA Preseason poll. He becomes the second Bobcat ever ranked in the top 100. Smith joins Fedrico Ueltschi, who earned his highest ranking of 58 in 2004...Sophomore Pawel Turzanski is ranked 23rd in the Mountain Region...The MSU men have won four Big Sky titles- 2000, 04, 05, and 06.
