Montana State (6-8, 0-2) trailed 55-36 with 14:20 left, before a Katie Bussey three-pointer with seven-seconds remaining capped a Bobcat rally to force an overtime period.
In the extra stanza, MSU held an 81-80 advantage on a Sarah Strand basket, but Sacramento State (3-13, 1-2) answered with six straight points.
An Anne Phippard triple and an Erica Perry 15-foot jumper tied the game at 86-all with 1:01 left, before Cannady’s field-goal ended the game.
“Right now, we don’t have an answer on defense,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “The bottom line is that you can’t dig yourself a huge hole and expect to get out of it. The Big Sky is too good to put yourself in a situation as we did against Sacramento State.”
Montana State was led by Nubia Garcia, who recorded a career-high 25 points, while adding eight rebounds and four steals. Perry matched her career mark with 19 points, while dishing out six assists and posting four steals.
Also in double-figures for MSU were Strand 13, Bussey 11 and Phippard 10.
Sacramento State held a 44-32 lead at halftime behind hot three-point shooting. The Hornets entered the game shooting 27 percent from long distance, but hit nine-of-13 treys for 69 percent from beyond the arc in the opening period.
The Hornets finished the contest connecting on 14-of-24 from three-point range and 20-of-25 from the free throw line. Sacramento State also held a 42-35 advantage under the boards.
Charday Hunt posted a career-high 27 points for the Hornets.
Montana State will play at Northern Arizona, Saturday at 6:35 p.m., in Walkup Skydome.
