Montana State Nordic Skiers Open Season on Strong Note

Monday’s freestyle races were held in conjunction with the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships. The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) results were tallied from the overall results, which included teams from all three regions of NCAA Skiing.
The Bobcat women’s team finished third overall with 62 points, placing behind UAA and defending national champion Denver. The Seawolves notched 81 points, while the Pioneers posted 68 overall.
Leading the MSU women was Mellie Park, a Bozeman native. Park notched her best collegiate outing as a Bobcat placing seventh overall, covering the five-kilometer freestyle event in 16:25.9.
Senior Claire Rennie followed closely in eighth place with a clocking of 16:29.5.
Also contributing for the Bobcats were Kaelin Kiesel, 17th, 16:51.7; Corrine Malcolm, 22nd, 17:27.7; Casey Kutz, 27th, 18:01.9; and Jamie Devin, 28th, 18:07.2.
Colorado’s Alexa Turzian captured the individual title with a time of 15:29.3.
The Montana State men’s team finished fourth recording 50 points. MSU trailed Colorado 82, UAA 78, and New Mexico 63.
Bernhard Roenning paced the Bobcats finishing 12th overall in 27:21.5 He was followed by Anders Folleraas, 13th, 27:23.8; Hans Nygren, 26th, 28:43.3; Daichi Ito, 31st, 29:27.0; and Ryan Scott, 33rd, 29:51.4.
Colorado’s Vegard Kjoelhamar won the men’s crown covering the 10-kilometer race in 25:41.9
UAA leads the meet after the opening day with 159 points. They are followed by Colorado 131, Denver 116, MSU 112, Nevada 105, Utah 105, Whitman 45 and Wyoming 24.
The Nordic events of the UAA Invitational will conclude Tuesday afternoon, with the alpine races taking place Friday and Saturday.
