Bobcats Fall to UM in Missoula

Sometimes the shots just don't fall.
Montana State shot just 34% from the field and 50% from the line, while Montana finished at 46% shooting and rolled to a 73-59 win over MSU in Dahlberg Arena on Saturday. Anthony Johnson scored 23 points for Montana, finishing 8-for-14 from the field and 15-for-16 from the free throw line. UM shot 67% in the second half after starting the game just 2-for-15. Jordan Hasquet joined Johnson in double-digits with 17. Will Bynum scored 14 to lead the Bobcats, while Erik Rush added 13 and Bobby Howard 10.
Montana built a double-digit lead midway through the second half on the strength of a 10-4 run. Anthony Johnson started and finished the run with baskets, but in between it was all Hasquet. The senior forward hit a couple of free throws and a couple of baskets.
"He played a great game," MSU coach Brad Huse said of Johnson. "He made plays for them."
Huse was disappointed with MSU's shooting, but not his team's effort. "We had a terrible shooting night. I'm not disappointed with the looks we got, or where we got the ball," he said. "But, 17-for-34 from the free throw line is horrendous."
The first half featured uneven play. The teams combined for just 49 points and 16 field goals. The Grizzlies shot 31% from the floor, hitting six of their last 11 field goals, while the Cats shot 28%. JC transfer Anthony Johnson shot just 1-for-5 before halftime, but led all players with eight points on the strength of a 6-for-6 free throw performance. Erik Rush led the Bobcats with seven first-half points, shooting 2-for-3 from the field and 2-for-2 from the line.The bench didn't contribute to the Bobcats' scoring effort in the first half.
MSU falls to 7-6 overall, 0-2 in Big Sky play with the loss. Montana evens its record at 7-7, and is 1-1 in the league. MSU hosts Sacramento State on Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
