Bobcat Women's Tennis Team Hosts Portland State in Home Opener

The Montana State women’s tennis team will host a pair of matches this weekend in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. MSU will open its Big Sky Conference season when it hosts Portland State on Friday at 12 p.m., followed by MSU Billings, Saturday, at 11 a.m. The Bobcat men’s tennis team will not open their 2009 slate until traveling to Air Force on Feb. 13, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
That Was The Week That Was:
The Montana State women opened their 2009 season at Boise State and met two heavyweights in the first dual matches of the season. In the opener, the Bobcats dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 45 Boise State. MSU’s lone victory came at No. 3 singles, where freshman Missy Harris (Billings) knocked off the Bronco’s Klaudia Wlodarczyk 6-2, 6-1. MSU’s No. 1 singles player Stephanie Jasper dropped a hard-fought three-set decision to No. 104 Pichittra Thongdach, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. On Saturday the Bobcats faced the Nittanly Lions of the Big-10 Conference. Penn State handed Montana State a 5-2 setback. MSU’s victories came at the top of the line-up as Jasper posted a 7-6, 6-2 win over Monika Mical, and Harris, who moved up to the No. 2 spot, to remain undefeated with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Maria Prishlyak. Playing at No. 3 singles, Montana State junior Laura Villegas dropped a tough 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 contest to Denisa Zobeideh.
Jasper Ranked:
Montana State’s No. 1 singles player Stephanie Jasper was ranked 30th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Central Region preseason poll. The ranking is a first for a MSU women’s player. Jasper, who prepped at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., notched a 17-3 singles mark as a freshman and a 10-3 ledger in doubles action. For her efforts, she was a first-team All Big Sky Conference pick.
Fab Frosh:
Freshman Missy Harris, a graduate of Billings Senior High School, went 2-0 playing in her first collegiate dual matches. Harris posted straight set wins at both No. 2 and No. 3 singles last weekend. As a prepster, Harris was one of the best players ever in the state of Montana. She captured four Montana Class AA singles titles, en route to posting a perfect four-year mark of 73-0. Harris never dropped a set in high school play. In addition, she was a four-time all-state honoree and was a four-time all-state academic selection, as well.
‘Cat Chat:
Junior transfer Corey Smith is ranked 82nd in the ITA Preseason poll. He becomes the second Bobcat ever ranked in the top 100. Smith joins Fedrico Ueltschi, who earned his highest ranking of 58 in 2004...Sophomore Pawel Turzanski is ranked 23rd in the Mountain Region...The MSU men have four Big Sky titles- 2000, 04,05,and 06.
