Bussey, a freshman from Alamosa, Colo., paced the Bobcats in the opening stanza with 15 points, while Strand, a sophomore from Seattle, dominated the second half with 15 points, including four three-pointers.
Bussey’s output was a career-high, as was Strand’s five three-pointers.
“We found our missing guard play and our second post,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford, referring to the play of Bussey and Strand. “In addition, our defense was consistent both halves. When we got stops, we transitioned very well.
“I thought Erica (Perry) did a great job,” Binford added. “Everyone fed off of her and we took what the defense gave us.”
In the first half, the lead changed hands seven times before Montana State (8-9, 2-3) scored seven unanswered points to close out the period and enter intermission with a 35-29 advantage.
Idaho State (5-13, 2-3) closed the margin to 47-45 at the 11:22 mark of the second stanza, before Montana State responded with an 18-0 run over the next six minutes to stake a comfortable 65-45 lead.
For the game, MSU shot 42 percent from the field, while holding the Bengals to 37 percent.
The Bobcats also won the battle of the boards owning a 40-33 advantage under the glass as MSU’s Nubia Garcia notched a career-high 16 rebounds.
Perry also recorded double-figures with 12 points, while adding five assists and four rebounds.
Idaho State was paced by Michelle Grohs with 12 points and seven rebounds.
