Staven Breaks School Record at MSU Combined Invite

Staven, a sophomore from Georgetown, Texas, broke the Montana State indoor heptathlon record scoring 5142 points to beat all competitors at the meet. The old record was set by Brad Benjamin in 2006 at 5,054 points.
Points in the combined event are awarded per event against a published standard of performance. Staven beat the meet field in the long jump and high jump events and had strong enough performances in the other five events to best the field and set the new school record.
Asa’s strengths will always be those two horizontal jump events,” multi-event coach Tom Eitel said. “He has room to make some more gains in almost all the events. He could reach the national qualifying standard this year in the heptathlon.” The provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA indoor national championship is 5300 points.
“Breaking the school record was one of the goals I had for myself here and it’s great it happened this early on,” Staven said.
He also qualified for the conference championships with the performance, as did Amanda DeHaan and Sarah McGree who competed in the women’s event on Friday.
