Make it seven.
Montana State earned only its seventh win ever in Ogden, and its sixth in the Dee Events Center, beating Weber State 75-70 on Thursday. Montana State is 7-42 in Ogden, 6-29 in the Purple Palace.
"It's obviously a good win because it's a conference win on the road," MSU coach Brad Huse said. "It got a little tough in the last minute, but our guys hung in there and stayed together."
Neither team led by more than five in the game's first 30 minutes. With 13:52 to play, Daviin Davis hit a short jumper to cut MSU's lead to 43-40, a play that launched a string of eight consecutive possessions on which Weber State scored, a stretch in which Weber missed only two field goal attempts over five minutes.
Montana State survived Weber's scorching play in the middle of the second half with hot three-point shooting. Erik Rush began the stretch with a conventional there-point play, Bobby Howard and Branden Johnson each drilled treys in that time, while Danny Piepoli hit three triples.
Piepoli's third three-pointer in a three-and-a-half minute stretch pushed MSU's lead to 60-56. Weber State's Trevor Morris answered with a pair of free throws, but the Wildcats scored only one basket over the next five minutes, as the Bobcats stretched the lead to 72-60.
Kyle Bullinger's three with 1:21 to play began a wild 81 seconds of basketball, during which Weber State scored 10 points on three possessions covering 20 seconds to cut MSU's lead to 72-70. At that point, Erik Rush converted two free throws, then Branden Johnson made a free throw in between two Weber turnovers to seal MSU's win.
Weber State's dynamic guard Kellen McCoy scored a game-high 21, and teammate Bullinger added 11, but Montana State thrived on its offensive balance. Howard scored 20, Rush 14, and Divaldo Mbunga and Piepoli each added 12.
MSU out-rebounded WSU 30-29, and after 10 first-half turnovers committed just five in the second half. Weber State turned the ball over seven times in each half. MSU finished 19-for-25 from the line, a 76% effort, and shot 49% from the field, 54% in the second half.
MSU raises its record to 10-6 on the season, 4-2 in the Big Sky, while the Wildcats fall to 9-8 overall and suffered their first league loss after three straight wins.
