Montana State Women Grind-Out Win Over Weber State

It wasn’t the prettiest game ever played, but it was a win nonetheless.
Behind Nubia Garcia’s 18 points and 13 rebounds and Erica Perry’s 17 points and three steals, the Montana State women’s basketball team posted its first Big Sky Conference win of the season with a 65-62 decision over Weber State, Thursday night in Worthington Arena.
“That was the first game this season we won with our defense,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I thought we gave a gritty performance. We kept battling until the very end.”
Weber State (5-11, 0-4) took an early lead building a 17-6 advantage at the 13:09 mark on a Caitlin Anderson three-pointer. MSU fought back and finally took its first lead at 34-33 with 1:04 remaining in the opening stanza on a Perry layup. WSU quickly answered and entered intermission with a 38-34 advantage.
In the second half, Montana State (7-9, 1-3) regained the lead at 48-46 on a Lyndi Seidensticker trey with 11:55 left. Weber State answered with eight straight points to stake a 54-48 margin on a Caela Mohre three-pointer with 8:02 remaining.
The Wildcats held the lead until Sarah Strand’s triple at the 3:03 mark tied the score at 57-all. The lead changed hands twice down the stretch, until Garcia’s layin, coupled by a pair of Perry free throws secured the win in the last minute.
Also notching double-figures for Montana State was Strand with 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
For the game, MSU shot 39 percent from the field, while holding WSU to 34 percent.
The Bobcats out-rebounded the Wildcats 48-40. Bobcat junior Jenny Heringer also had a strong performance under the glass with nine rebounds.
Weber State was paced by Ali Thorderson with 18 points, all from three-point range.
MSU will host Idaho State, Saturday night at 7:05 p.m., in Worthington Arena.
