The Montana State women’s basketball team has dropped six-of-its-last-eight games, all but one on the road, and eagerly await its two-game homestand against Weber State and Idaho State this weekend in Worthington Arena. Last week, the Bobcats dropped a pair of Big Sky games, losing to Sacramento State (88-86) in overtime and Northern Arizona (76-61). MSU is currently 6-9 overall and 0-3 in league action. Weber State has dropped five consecutive games, including a pair of BSC contests, last weekend at home. The Wildcats have been paced this winter by Tonya Schnibbe and Caitlin Anderson, who average 13.9 and 13.1 points, respectively. Weber State is currently 5-10 overall and 0-3 in league.
That Was The Week That Was:
Montana State opened the weekend with an 88-86 overtime setback at Sacramento State. The Hornets shot 69 percent from three-point range in the opening stanza en route to a 44-32 advantage at intermission. Sacramento State held a 55-36 lead with 14:20 remaining before the Bobcats staged a furious comeback capped by a Katie Bussey three-pointer with seven-seconds left to force overtime. MSU held an 81-80 lead with 2:41 left in the extra period, but allowed the Hornets a 6-0 run to secure the victory. Nubia Garcia notched a career-high 25 points on 10-of-17 from the field. She also added eight rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Erica Perry matched a career-high with 19 points, with Sarah Strand 13, Bussey 11, and Anne Phippard also posting double-figures. For the game, MSU was outrebounded 42-35. On Saturday, the Bobcats dropped a 76-61 decision at Northern Arizona. MSU trailed early as NAU built a 39-23 margin at halftime. Montana State closed to within 47-37 at the 14:53 mark, but would get no closer. The Bobcats were led by Perry 15, Phippard 11, Garcia 10 and Bussey 10.
MSU Player of the Week:
Forward Nubia Garcia has been named Montana State University Player of the Week for her efforts at Sacramento State and Northern Arizona. For the weekend, Garcia averaged 17.5 points and six rebounds per game, while shooting a whopping 65 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line. In addition, the 6-foot-2 senior, added six steals and two blocks, along with one assist. Garcia had her best game of the weekend against Sacramento State, notching a career-high 25 points on 10-of-17 from the floor and five-of-seven from the charity stripe. She also added eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
Cover Girl:
Montana State senior Nubia Garcia is currently second in the Big Sky in rebounding, averaging 8.0 boards per game. She has posted nine games with nine or more rebounds. In addition, Garcia is 8th in the league in scoring and tops on the Bobcat squad averaging 12.7 points per contest. Garcia, a 6-2 forward from Chihuahua, Mexico posted a career-high 25 points against Sacramento State, connecting on 10-of-17 from the field. A three-time All Big Sky Conference Academic honoree, Garcia will be featured in January’s edition of CHAMPION magazine, published by the NCAA. The edition will feature NCAA student-athletes pursuing degrees in the Arts. Garcia, who is depicted in a self protrait on the cover, is majoring in photography. In addition, Garcia’s work will also be on display at the NCAA convention in Washington D. C.
Jenny, We Got Your Number:
Junior Jenny Heringer has made a significant impact on the Bobcat squad this winter. A graduate of Billings Central and former Montana Gatorade Player of the Year, Heringer is averaging 9.1 points and 5.8 rebounds. A second-team all-conference selection last winter, she has been in double-digit scoring in seven games. Heringer notched a season-high 20 points against Western Carolina, and has also had 11 boards on two occasions, the last coming against Idaho. Heringer has cooled off the past five games, averaging just 4.4 points per outing.
Ying-and-the-Yang:
The Bobcats rank among the Big Sky’s top in scoring offense, FG percentage and 3-point FG percentage. MSU ranks last in scoring defense and FG percentage defense.
Montana Ink:
Montana State head coach Tricia Binford announced five high school student-athletes who signed National Letters-of-Intent to compete for the Bobcats during the 2009-10 season. Inking with Montana State were Latisha Adams, a 5-foot-9 guard from Albuquerque, New Mexico; Ashley Albert, a 6-foot-1 forward from Hamilton, Montana; Chelsea Banis, a 6-foot-4 center from Fairfield, Montana; Kelsey Roben, a 5-foot-10 guard from Denver, Colorado; and Ally Schmitt, a 5-foot-7 from Snohomish, Washington.
Touting Tiny:
Erica Perry is havng an outstanding season running the point for the Bobcat squad. One of the Big Sky’s top defenders, Perry has improved her offensive exploits this season. She is currently second on the team in scoring averaging 12.1 points. The 5-foot-4 native of Lynwood, Calif, is also tops on the squad in assists and steals. Perry matched a career high with 19 points in MSU’s overtime loss at Sacramento State. On the weekend, she averaged 16.5 points and 3.5 assists per game.
Phippard Phile:
Senior Anne Phippard broke into MSU’s starting line-up against Western Carolina and has held the spot ever since. The three-time Big Sky Conference All-Academic selection is averaging 8.3 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. In addition, Phippard is shooting 44 percent from the field and 92 percent from the free throw line. She recorded a career-high 20 points in MSU’s victory over Western Carolina, Nov. 29. Phippard is currently third in the Big Sky in 3-point FG percentage at .439.
Stranded:
Sarah Strand is coming back from off-season knee surgery and has started in MSU’s last three outings. The 6-foot-1 forward from Seattle, Wash., is averaging 9.1 points and 3.5 rebounbds per game. Last weekend, she recorded 13 points against Sacramento State on 5-of-7 from the field. In addition, she added three assists and a blocked shot. Strand tied a career-high with 19 points against North Dakota in Montana State’s home-opening victory.
Highlighting Hoefer:
Senior Mara Hoefer, who saw action in just 15 games last winter, has played in all 15 contests this year, including ten starts. A native of Germany, Hoefer is averaging 5.5 points and 2.4 rebounds, while shooting 49 percent from the field. Hoefer posted a career-high 12 points against the University of North Dakota. She recently was a Montana State University “Awards of Excellence” recipient and will be honored later this winter for her scholastic aptitude.
Stick-It:
Lyndi Seidensticker has played in all 15 games for the Bobcats and is one of the team’s outside threats. ‘Stick’ is averaging 6.3 points and 1.7 rebounds. In addition, she is shooting 88 percent from the charity stripe. Seidensticker, a sophomore from Spokane, has started four games and has connected on 14-of-42 three-point attempts. She had a career-high 13 points against Great Falls in December.
Getting Bussey:
Freshman Katie Bussey is off to a great start as a Bobcat. The 5-foot-9 native of Colorado, is the top frosh scorer in the Big Sky Conference, averaging 9.5 points per game. Bussey is also shooting 37 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the line. She posted a career and season-best 15 points against Gonzaga. Last weekend, Bussey averaged 10.5 points per game and hit the big trey to force OT at Sac State.
Sweet:
Rachel Pauli, a graduate of Sweet Grass High School in Big Timber, has played in 14 of MSU’s 15 games this season. The 6-foot-1 forward is averaging 3.4 rebounds per game, and is still transitioning from a high school point-guard into a front line player. Pauli notched a career and season-high seven rebounds at Northern Arizona.
Jammin’ With Jamie:
Jamie Thornton, MSU’s tallest player at 6-foot-4, has played in eight games, and is averaging 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. A native of Pullman, Wash., Thornton posted a season-best eight points in MSU’s win over Great Falls.
