Bobcats return home with big win

The Bobcats raced to a 35-0 lead behind Crawford’s two scores and two more touchdowns by short-yardage specialist C.J. Palmer. The win at Bobcat Stadium came after a bye week for MSU and prior road losses at Kansas State and Minnesota.
The Bobcats (2-2) outgained the Coyotes of the Great West Conference 387-241. In the fourth quarter, the Coyotes made the score respectable against the Bobcat second unit. Dion Foster ran in from 32 yards for USD’s first score. Then after a long punt return by Jeremy Blount, Isaac Newton scored from the 7. USD’s final score came with 17 seconds to play when backup quarterback Dante Warren connected with London Landry for a 3-yard touchdown.
But the game was decided early. Palmer powered in from 1 yard out to open the scoring. A pitchout to freshman wide receiver DeSean Thomas accounted for 40 yards in the first scoring drive.
Thomas, who caught four passes for 90 yards, hauled in a 9-yard toss from Cody Kempt early in the second quarter and it was 14-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, Palmer ran in from the 2 and Crawford scored on a 7-yard scamper to make it 28-0. MSU’s final touchdown was early in the fourth quarter as Crawford ran in from the 7.
The Bobcats dominated the game by amassing 216 yards on the ground. But the passing game struggled as Kempt finished 12 of 21 for 157 yards, but threw three interceptions.
Dane Fletcher led the Bobcat defense with two of the three sacks of USD quarterbacks.
MSU travels to Idaho State next week for its first Big Sky Conference game. On Oct. 11 MSU is home against Weber State.
USD travels to Cal Poly next week for its fourth road game of the season.
