The Montana State volleyball team will play their first road matches of the Big Sky Conference season when they travel to the Pacific Northwest this weekend. The Bobcats will begin play at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on Thursday, before facing Portland State University on Saturday in the Stott Center in the Rose City. Montana State (3-9, 0-2) is coming off losses to Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado, last weekend in its home-opener in Shroyer Gym. Both Eastern Washington (4-7, 1-1) and Portland State (9-3, 2-0) opened play on the road. EWU split their weekend series, defeating Weber State (3-2), before getting swept by Idaho State (3-0) on Saturday in Reed Gym. The Vikings won both of its contests last weekend. Playing on the same road trip as the Eagles, PSU opened Big Sky play sweeping both Idaho State (3-0) and Weber State (3-0). Portland State is currently the defending Big Sky Conference champion.
The Week That Was:
The Bobcats dropped a pair of Big Sky Conference matches last weekend in Shroyer Gym. Montana State opened the weekend with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-16 loss to Northern Arizona. For the match, the Lumberjacks out-hit the Bobcats .145 to .029 from the field. The two squads were even in aces and digs, while Montana State held an 8-5 advantage in blocking. Individually, MSU was paced by Laura Viren with eight kills and 12 digs, while Nicole Grypiuk and Kaytlin Van Burger added seven kills, apiece. Setter Taylor Faught dished out 27 assists, while Kyla Hendry led all players with a match-high four blocks. Sophomore Jodeen Rademacher guided the Bobcats with a team-high 15 digs. On Saturday night, Northern Colorado handed Montana State a 25-20, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22 setback. Rademacher led the Bobcats with 11 kills, while Grypiuk posted ten kills and a .214 attack mark. Defensively, Montana State was guided by Laura Viren with 15 digs. At the net, Kaytlin Van Burger ended the contest with a match-high six blocks. Taylor Faught had a weekend high 37 assists vs. UNC.
The Scouting Report:
The Eastern Washington volleyball team has been on a roller-coaster ride since the beginning of the season. The Eagles are 4-7 overall and 1-1 in Big Sky play, after defeating Weber State and losing to Idaho State last weekend. Eastern Washington has posted notable victories over Arkansas, Notre Dame and Washington State. Like the Bobcats, the Eagles have played two top 25 squads this fall, losing to No. 12 Oregon and No. 17 Colorado State. EWU is under the direction of first-year head coach Myles Kidd. On the court, the Eagles are led by Hayley Hills, who averages 3.97 kills and 2.62 digs per set. Portland State is 9-3 overall and 2-0 in Big Sky action. Last weekend, the Vikings swept both Idaho State and Weber State. PSU will face Montana on Thursday night, before meeting the Bobcats on Saturday. Portland State has recorded wins over the College of Charleston, Wyoming, and Gonzaga, while dropping matches to Oregon State, Washington and Idaho. The Vikings have four players averaging 2.00 kills or better, led by Jennifer Oney at 2.61 kills per set.
Player of the Week:
Senior outside hitter Laura Viren is Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts against Northern Arizona and Northern Colorado last weekend. Viren averaged 2.29 kills and 3.86 digs in two matches. She had her best outing vs. No. Colorado with eight kills, two aces and 15 digs. Viren is also averaging .36 aces.
Stat of the Week:
Kaytlin Van Burger has posted six matches with eight kills, which is half of MSU’s contests.
