Bobcat freshman Patrick Casey of Laurel finished 11th overall and first for MSU covering the five-mile course in 25:08. Casey’s time ranks 10th all-time for a Bobcat on the Bridger Creek course.
“Patrick had a very credible first race,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “He’s exciting to watch and he helped set the tone for the rest of the team.”
Other Bobcat finishers included Devin McDowell, 34th, 26:07; Kelvin Daratha, 37th, 26:19; Forrest Jarvi, 40th, 26:27; Carl Nystuen, 41st; 26:28; Dan Jackson, 49th, 26:46; and Chris Baldus, 52nd, 26:53.
“The exciting thing about this group is that they had a 21-second split from 2-5,” Kennedy said. “There is plenty of room for improvement, but if they continue to develop as a group and stick together it will set them up well for the Big Sky meet.”
MSU ran without the services of Matt Beamer, Matt Adams and Tyler Noland due to injuries, while Nick Atwood and Graydon Curry are sitting out the season as redshirts.
Individually, Mark Korir of Wyoming defended his MSU Invitational title, covering the course in 24:28 with the seventh fastest time ever recorded at Bridger Creek.
Weber State won the men’s team title with 43 points, followed by Utah State 54, Wyoming 55, Montana 107, Utah Valley 114, MSU 151, Dickinson State 213, Great Falls 241, Carroll 285, MSU Billings 332, and Rocky Mountain 338.
Bobcat newcomer Heather Haug of Livingston placed 21st overall and was MSU’s top runner covering the three-mile course in 18:10.
She was followed by Morgan Dunley, 25th, 18:14; Kala Jacquet, 30th, 18:20; Rebecca Sorenson, 34th, 18:29; Lauren Kuennen, 40th, 18:39; Katie Gilboy, 71st, 20:49; and Carey Downey, 74th, 21:04.
“I’m really excited about the possibilities for the present and future with our women’s team,” Kennedy said. “We had a 29-second split between the first five kids, and we haven’t had that in awhile.”
MSU’s Elisabeth Driscoll, who has exhausted her cross country eligibility, but will run both indoor and outdoor track this season, ran unattached finishing second overall in 17:17.
Wyoming’s Emily Higgins won the women’s title in 17:13.
Weber State won the women’s team title with 44 points, followed by Utah State 60, Wyoming 71, Montana 105, Utah 111, Utah Valley 140, MSU 144, Carroll 295, Westminster 296, MSU Billings 300, Rocky Mountain 333, Great Falls 334, and Dickinson State 363.
