Montana State (3-9, 0-2) was paced by Jodeen Rademacher and Nicole Grypiuk with 11 and ten kills, respectively. Junior setter Taylor Faught dished out 37 assists, while Laura Viren posted a team-high 15 digs and Kaytlin Van Burger added a match-high six blocks.
MSU opened the match sprinting to an 11-3 lead and held a 14-7 advantage before Northern Colorado (7-2, 1-1) rattled off seven unanswered points to tie the score. A Rademacher kill ended the streak; however the Bears finished off the set on a 9-4 run to get the victory.
“We changed a few things from our match with Northern Arizona on Friday and I was pleased with how we started the match,” said MSU first-year head coach Sara Schaub. “We accomplished our goals, but we gave up too many runs and they always come back to haunt us at the end.”
The second stanza featured 11 ties and four lead changes. With the score tied at 19-all the Bobcats went on a 6-1 run highlighted by a Viren kill to give MSU a three-point cushion and the eventual set win.
In the third set, Northern Colorado out-hit Montana State .321 to .000 to cruise to the victory.
In the final game, the score was tied ten times before the Bears took a 17-13 advantage. MSU fought back at 21-all following a Van Burger kill. Northern Colorado scored two straight points before a Grypiuk kill closed the margin to 23-22. UNC closed out the match with two straight points, winning on an Allison Raguse kill.
“I thought we did some nice things,” Schaub said. “We just need to cut down on a few small errors we seem to commit at the wrong time. If we can do that, we can be a pretty good team.”
Northern Colorado was led in the win by Kenzie Shreeve with 22 kills and 12 digs.
Montana State will travel to Eastern Washington on Thursday.
