Montana State Spikers Fall to Lumberjacks

Montana State (3-8, 0-1) was led in the loss by Laura Viren with eight kills and 12 digs, while Kaytlin Van Burger posted seven kills and two blocks.
MSU opened the first set storming out to a 15-11 lead following a Northern Arizona (9-1, 1-0) hitting error. However, the Lumberjacks rattled off a 9-5 run to even the set at 20-all. NAU then scored four unanswered points before a Nicole Grypiuk kill stopped the run at 24-21. Northern Arizona won the set on a Lexi Sullivan kill.
“I was really pleased with how we came out and established ourselves,” said MSU first-year head coach Sara Schaub. “However, once our passing broke down we got out of system and had a hard time regrouping.”
In the second stanza, MSU jumped out to an early 5-3 lead before NAU took off on a 17-8 run to stake a 20-13 advantage. The Bobcats fought back and closed the margin to 24-22 on a block by Kyla Hendry and Viren. Emily Osiadacz’ kill ended the second set.
The final set belonged to Northern Arizona as the Lumberjacks hit .154 from the floor, while holding the Bobcats to -.044.
“Stat-wise we hung with them, with the exception of errors,” Schaub said. “And, they weren’t aggressive errors.”
For the match, MSU out-blocked NAU 8-5. The Bobcats were led at the net by Hendry with a match-high four blocks. Defensively, Montana Stat was paced by Jodeen Rademacher with 15 digs, while Viren and Meghan Albiston added 12 and ten saves, respectively.
Northern Arizona was led in the win by Alex Fell with 12 kills, while Brittany Stowers, the nation’s leading digger, posted a match-high 25 saves.
Montana State will host Northern Colorado, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym at 7 p.m.
