Daly Defends 'Ugliest' Pass

Quarterback controversy gripped the Bobcat program over the weekend, but it had nothing to do with Cody Kempt or Mark Iddins.
After throwing what linebacker Jeff Price laughingly called 'the ugliest pass' he'd ever seen on a fourth-down out of punt formation on Saturday, Bobby Daly defended his first collegiate pass attempt on Tuesday. "When you're out there under fire, you just get it there," Daly said with a smile at MSU's weekly press conference on Tuesday. "In my opinion, (completing the pass) is all that matters."
The play came after Minnesota had stopped the Bobcats on three downs on the first possession of the second half. MSU faced a fourth-and-four from the Bobcat 25. From his position as up-back in deep punt formation, Daly lofted a pass to Joe Schreibeis for 20 yards and a first down. The extended drive resulted in a 49-yard field goal by Jason Cunningham.
"I've never thrown a pass (in a game) since I was probably a sixth grader," Daly said, admitting that he was nervous and excited when the call was made. "I just lobbed it up there and Joe made a good play on it."
Bobcat coach Rob Ash said the play served several different purposes. "We put it in to have some fun, and because we thought it would be a good way to slow the (opponents') rush down," he said. "I intended to use it against Kansas State, but the opportunity never presented itself. You could see after (the fake) that it changed the way (Minnesota) came after us."
Mostly, though, the play was fun. "Yeah," Daly smiled, "it was."
