The Montana State volleyball team will travel to the Palouse this weekend to compete in the Washington State-Cougar Challenge in Bohler Gym (3000). The Bobcats will open play on Friday against Northwestern of the Big 10 Conference. The Wildcats are currently 3-2 overall. On Saturday, Montana State will face host WSU and No. 18 Wichita State. The Cougars are 3-3 overall, while the Shockers are 8-0, including a season-opening win over then No. 10 Cal Poly. The Bobcats are 3-4 on the season, after finishing second at the Air Force Academy Volleyball Classic with a 2-2 record. MSU defeated Air Force and Akron, and suffered setbacks to North Carolina State and UC Davis. With its victory over Air Force, the Bobcats doubled their win total from the 2007 season. In fact, Montana State won just seven games last fall. Already this season, the Bobcats have posted a total of 12 set victories.
Looking At The Cougar Challenge:
The Bobcats face three squads that are a combined 15-4 overall, including No. 18 Wichita State, who enters with an 8-0 overall record. MSU’s first-round opponent this weekend is Big Ten member Northwestern. The WIldcats are 3-2 overall, defeating Illinois-Chicago, Cleveland State and Towson, while dropping matches to Loyola-Chicago and Dayton. Northwestern has been led this season by Brittani Gray, a 6-foot outside hitter, who is averaging 3.06 kills per game. Host Washington State is 4-3 on the season. The Cougars have recorded victories over Cal State Northridge, Seattle, Boise State and Gonzaga. One of WSU’s setbacks came at the hands of Big Sky Conference member Eastern Washington (3-1). No. 18 Wichita State is coming off the championship of its own tournament last weekend. The Shockers downed Ohio State, Coastal Carolina, Idaho State and Lamar en route to the title. WSU is led by Emily Stockman, who is averaging 3.48 kills and 2.86 digs per set.
The Week That Was:
The Montana State volleyball team went 2-2 at the Air Force Academy Volleyball Classic last weekend in Colorado Springs. MSU finished second overall behind UC Davis, and ahead of Air Force, Akron, and North Carolina State. The Bobcats opened the tournament with a 3-1 loss to UCD. MSU was led in the loss by Nicole Grypiuk with 12 kills, a .290 attack mark and two blocks. In Friday’s night-cap, Montana State defeated Air Force 3-1 to double its win total from last fall. Against AFA, three players reached double-digit kills, paced by Jodeen Rademacher with 11 and Kaytlin Van Burger and Grypiuk with ten, apiece. Van Burger also added a match-high six blocks. Montana State played its poorest match of the weekend in the 3-0 loss to North Carolina State. For the match, MSU hit a paltry .019 from the field. The ‘Cats were led by Rademacher and Grypiuk with seven kills each. Libero Meghan Albiston paced MSU defensively with 11 digs. MSU rebounded from the loss with a 3-2 win over Akron. Rademacher posted a season-high 22 kills, while Grypiuk and Kyla Hendry added 15 and ten kills, respectively.
Stand Up and Cheer:
Despite its 1-27 overall record and 0-12 home slate, the Bobcats averaged 840 fans per game, which was the best in the Big Sky Conference. MSU drew a season-best 1,287 for the annual ‘Cat-Griz match. Montana State averaged 755 fans last weekend.
Player of the Week:
Sophomore libero Meghan Albiston was named Montana State’s Player of the Week for her efforts at the Air Force Academy Volleyball Classic over the weekend. Albiston played in all 16 sets and collected 73 digs, averaging 4.56 per game. Albiston posted two matches with 20 or more digs, and was in double-digit saves in all four matches.
Stat of the Week:
MSU has won five more sets than last year.
