Rudy Lands National Honor, Women's Team Stands Fourth

Ellie Rudy spent the 2008 indoor track and field season soaring above the competition on her way to a second consecutive NCAA pole vault championship. On Wednesday, Rudy earned one of the sports highest honors when the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named her Indoor Field Events Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
"That's really cool," Rudy said, "and it's such an honor because of how many great competitors are out there. I'm honored, and I'm proud to represent Montana State."
Rudy, a junior from Woodland Park, Colo., and four teammates earned spots on the USTFCCCA Division I Women's All-Academic Team, and Montana State's team GPA of 3.490 stands as fourth-highest in the nation, as ranked by the organization.
"This is a great honor for Ellie," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy, "who represents Montana State University and our program so well in so many different ways. I'm also so proud of our program. Our mission is to educate our student-athletes, and for those kids to perform as well as they do athletically as well as in the classroom is excellent."
Four-time Big Sky javelin champion Kim Berg (sr., Kremlin, Mont.) landed on the USTFCCCA All-Academic list. She was joined by Kris Schaffer (so., Pierre, S.D.), Lena Suek (fr., Havre, Mont.), Emily Tyrrell (fr., Grand Forks, N.D.), and Rudy.
In addition, men's thrower Nathan Palmer (sr., Helena, Mont.) landed on the men's all-academic list. The Bobcat men's team finished 31st nationally with a 3.080 cumulative grade point average.
