Bobcat coach Rob Ash said Wednesday's practice was about what he expected. "I thought it was kind of sloppy, honestly, and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that we were in pads for the first time. It's different. Guys haven't worn pads since April, and they ran around all summer free and easy. All of a sudden the guy across from you is smacking into you pretty hard. Things are different. It's always an adjustment."
Ash said MSU's aggressive scheme installation schedule magnifies the process of transitioning to contact. "It's day three installation, so there's three times as much in as on day one. With the combination of the two it was kind of a sloppy day, but that's usually what happens on the first day in pads."
Ash indicated that the process of evaluating players and positions continues to pick up steam as fall camp advances. "You learn a little bit more each day. The first couple days in just helmets you have a first impression on guys, but it doesn't involve contact. Then you put the pads on and you begin to get a sense of what happens when the bullets start flying, but you really don't know for sure until you're in scrimmage situations to see who can finish plays."

The first recruiting class assembled by Rob Ash and his staff continues to impress the coaches. "It's a good-looking group," Ash said. He indicated that receiver DeSean Thomas not only has opened eyes, but stands as an example of the difference between this year's Bobcat camp and last year's. "DeSean has looked good, and the guys around him have done a nice job helping him adjust. Last year everyone was new, and everyone was in the same boat, but this year veterans can help the new guys get adjusted, and that's an advantage."
