The University of Washington captured the 14th Annual Holiday Inn Classic title going undefeated on the weekend, while the Bobcats finished second based on sets won in head-to-head action with Portland.
“The whole tournament was a great success for our team,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “We did a lot of good things, and when you get to the fifth set, it’s a coin toss.”
MSU opened the match racing to a 10-7 advantage before the Pilots answered with an 8-1 run. UP maintained the margin to capture the first set.
Montana State (1-2) jumped out to a 14-6 lead in the second stanza on a Rademacher kill. The Bobcats cruised to the victory as Rademacher posted another winner.
Despite holding a 12-9 advantage in game three, Portland (1-2) used a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 margin. The Bobcats evened the score at 15-all, before the Pilots pulled away with a 10-4 run down the stretch.
The fourth set was all Montana State as the Bobcats got out to a 17-10 advantage. MSU held on for the four-point win on a Rademacher kill.
In the final set, the Bobcats held a 10-5 lead following a Portland hitting error. MSU maintained the lead at 12-9 on a Rademacher kill. However, UP finished the set on a 6-1 run to take the match.
“We gave up too many runs over the course of the match and that’s something we’ll work on,” Schaub said. “This was a great opening weekend, and we faced some big, physical players. That will serve us well heading into next weekend.”
For the match, the Bobcats recorded more blocks, digs, and aces, while also holding a .240 to .225 hitting advantage. Portland posted 11 more kills than MSU.
Also recording double-digit kills for the Bobcats were Kaytlin Van Burger and Nicole Grypiuk with 11 apiece. Junior setter Taylor Faught dished out 51 assists and added 11 digs. Defensively, MSU was led by Meghan Albiston with 21 digs, while Kyla Hendry notched a match-high seven blocks.
UP was paced in the win by KC Fox with 17 kills and a .368 attack mark.
For their efforts, Rademacher and Faught were named to the Holiday Inn All-Classic team along with Fox and Ashley Grayson of Portland, and Tamari Miyashiro and Becky Perry of Washington. UW’s Airial Salvo was named tournament most valuable player.
MSU will play at the Air Force Academy tournament Sept. 5-6.
