Three Bobcats reached double-digit kills, led by sophomore transfer Jodeen Rademacher, who notched a match-high 15 kills. Also contributing were Nicole Grypiuk and Kyla Hendry with 13 and ten, kills respectively.
“Our number one goal was to keep it easy, and not get too excited coming into the match,” Schaub said. “We were all business.”
Portland got out to an early start in the opening set taking a 10-6 advantage before the Bobcats answered to even the game at 13-all on a Rademacher kill. MSU pulled away at 17-all as Grypiuk and Rademacher combined for three kills. The Bobcats won the first set on another Rademacher put-a-way.
“I thought our outsides were very aggressive,” Schaub said. “Taylor (Faught) did a nice job moving the offense around.”
Faught, a 5-8 setter from Billings, dished out 40 assists and added a team-high eight digs.
In the second stanza, MSU trailed 15-11 before rattling off 6-1 run to stake 17-16 advantage on a Hendry kill. With the score tied a 22-all, Rademacher tallied a winner followed by a Faught block and a Pilot hitting error.
The third set was identical to the second with the exception of Portland pulling away at 22-all for the win. In the final game, the Bobcats went up 15-10 at the midway point and captured the match on a block by Laura Viren and Kaytlin Van Burger.
Hendry, who has been sidelined with injuries over the past three years, led the Bobcats hitting .421 from the field, while adding four blocks. Van Burger ended with eight kills and a match-high five blocks.
As a team, MSU hit .299 from the field, along with holding a 10-5 advantage in blocking and a 6-4 margin in service aces.
The victory matches MSU’s win total from last season and snaps a 16-match losing streak.
The Bobcats will host No. 9 Washington, Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
