Center Jim Verlanic's ankle sprain wasn't the only injury suffered in Bobcat camp in recent days. The most serious is to redshirt freshman cornerback Colby Kinna, whose left knee injury likely ends his season. Kicker/punter Eric Fisher suffered a right leg strain, and is out for a day or two. Other current injuries are day-to-day or practice-to-practice situations.

Rob Ash was pleased with his defensive unit during the morning's full-contact 11-on-11 period. "The effort on defense was tremendous today," he said, "extremely quick. Chris Kolone is just lightning-quick for a 300 pound guy inside. Our defensive ends are playing fast. I thought our pass rush on defense was terrific."

The Bobcat offense continues to show well during scrimmage situations, particularly on the ground. "Right now we're running the ball just fine," Ash said. "In the scrimmage on Saturday and in (Monday morning's) practice the running game was where we had the best success with our offense. That's good to see, because one of the things we wanted to do in spreading the field a little more is to run the football (effectively)." That observation doesn't condemn the Bobcat passing game to secondary status in the team's offense. Success in the air, Ash says, will come. "Obviously we're further ahead from an experience standpoint with our running game and running backs than we are with quarterbacks. I think the passing game will come along when we start to get more and more reps for the quarterbacks." Demetrius Crawford scored on consecutive running plays in red zone situations on Monday morning, while Cody Kempt also impressed with a keeper on a zone read. "Those were good runs," Ash said.
