Montana State’s Garcia Plays for Mexican National Team

The Mexican National Team is 2-2 overall, defeating Costa Rica (93-57) and Barbados (84-70), and losing to international power Cuba (96-45) and host Puerto Rico (84-55).
“This is my fourth time playing with the national team,” said Garcia, who was preparing for Monday’s third place game against the Dominican Republic. “This has been a great experience and will really help me for the upcoming season at Montana State. I feel stronger, quicker and improved.”
Garcia has averaged 13.3 points and six rebounds in the four games, and is third overall in free throws made and free throw percentage for the entire tournament. The 6-foot-2 native of Chihuahua posted a tournament high 19 points in eight rebounds against Costa Rica. She was also in double-figures against Barbados and Puerto Rico.
The Mexican National Team’s top scorer is Garcia’s sister, Abril (27), who is averaging 22.7 points per game.
“It’s been a lot of fun playing with my sister,” Garcia said. “Playing teams like Cuba is a whole different level, but will only make me better. It was really cool playing them.”
The Mexican National Team finished second in Group A behind Puerto Rico. Cuba and Puerto Rico will play for the tournament title. The Cuban National Team will also be playing in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Garcia plans to travel to Chihuahua, Mexico following the tournament, before returning to Bozeman in mid August.
