Dan Johnson and Montana State's strong group of throwers led the way in the MSU Track and Field program's 2008 post-season awards, Bobcat coach Dale Kennedy announced.
Johnson, a junior from Livingston, earned MSU's Men's Top Gun Award as the program's most productive competitor in points scored over the past season. The Big Sky 400 meter champion, Johnson scored 58 points to lead all MSU male athletes. He also earned the team's Track Events Athlete of the Year, and shared MSU's Most Improved award by shaving his 400 time from 47.11 to 46.50, and his 200 time from 21.57 to 21.36.
Junior pole vaulter Nick Morrow shared Most Improved honors by increasing his mark frm 15-9 to 16-2.75. Sophomore javelin thrower Nick Lam (Billings), earned Field Events Athlete of the Year after finishing second in the Big Sky and ninth in the NCAA Midwest Region. Asa Staven grabbed the Men's Freshman of the Year award, finishing third in the long jump and eighth in the high jump at the league meet.
Allison Jones ended her sophomore year by capturing Women's Top Gun honors with 67 points, edging junior sprinter Autumn Domitrovich, who scored 64.75 points. Domitrovich earned Track Event Athlete of the Year honors, finished fifth in the 100 and sixth in the 200 in the Big Sky. The Anaconda native also ran on both relays. Senior Kim Berg earned Field Event Athlete of the Year honors. The Kremlin native won her fourth straight Big Sky javelin title.
Emily Tyrrell earned Freshman of the Year honors, and shared the Most Improved award on the women's side. The Grand Forks, ND, product finished third in the Big Sky and 11th in the Midwest Region in the javelin, improving from 126-0 to 155-1 over the course of the season. Domitrovich improved from 12.42 to 12.08 in the 100 and from 25.04 to 24.59 in the 200, while Kris Schaffer (so., Pierre, SD) set the women's shot put school record at 50-0, a three-foot improvement, to each grab a share of Most Improved honors, as well.
"The kids on this list really achieved at a high level," Kennedy said. "It speaks well for the future of this program that so many return next season."
