NCAA Issues Annual APR Report

Montana State received mostly positive news from the NCAA in its annual Academic Progress Rate (APR) Report, issued Tuesday. The report, covering the academic years of 2003-04 through '06-07, found Bobcat Athletics performing well on the whole. The MSU football program, in spite of making marked improvement, was penalized one-and-a-half scholarships for 2008-09.
FCS programs allocate a maximum of 63 scholarships annually. The Bobcat football program gave an average of 59.04 scholarships over the past four years. The loss of 1.5 scholarships comes from that baseline, setting MSU's allotment at 57.47 for next year.
"Our overall academic performance, as measured by the NCAA, is improving," Fields said. "We've worked hard to improve our performance in this area, and our efforts are paying off."
Bobcat football coach Rob Ash, who took the reigns of the program last June, lauded his club for its work. "I want to commend my team for its academic performance this year. They have worked hard in the classroom, indications are that this semester is going well, and we are hopeful that the APR figure for this year will be very good."
The NCAA announced its most recent APR findings Tuesday. Per the sanctions, MSU also loses one opportunity off its initial scholarship count and three from its total count of players. Two hours a week formerly spent in practice time will also be spent on academic work.
Montana State's football APR figure improved to 903 for the 2006-07 academic year, raising its four-year average to 876. The MSU men's basketball program posted a 925 APR for the 2006-07 academic year, an improvement over its four-year average of 899. Every other Bobcat Athletic program's four-year average topped 933 points, higher than the minimum figure which exposes a program to sanctions. In 2006-07, five MSU teams scored 1000 points, or 100% (men's and women's skiing, women's cross country, women's golf, and women's tennis).
Fields indicated the process to improve MSU's APR performance continues. "This is a process, and we know in order to do this the right way there aren't quick fixes. We began instituting programs several years ago with that goal in mind, and we continue to work hard to facilitate improvement using input and ideas from many different sources. We continue to try to get better."
