Freshman Emily Tyrrell posted a personal best by four feet to highlight Montana State at the NCAA Midwest Regional Track and Field Championships in Lincoln, Nebr., on Saturday. Tyrrell was MSU’s highest finisher, checking in at 11th in the women’s javelin.
Tyrrell finished ahead of four-time Big Sky Champion Kim Berg, who MSU coach Dale Kennedy said battled an Achilles injury all weekend. “Kim’s injury was really a problem for her,” Kennedy said. “She was compromised, for sure.” In spite of a regional performance that didn’t match her regular season best, Berg remains in contention for a spot in the NCAA Championships based on her regular season best mark.
Kennedy said a bright spot on the weekend for MSU was the experience gained by the team’s 11 athletes who competed in Lincoln. “All but three of these kids come back next year. This experience will be a great building block for those kids.”
Men’s Hammer: 13 Nathan Palmer 188-08
Women’s Shot: 15 Allison Jones 47-07.25
Women’s Shot: 23 Kris Schaffer 43-09.25
Women’s Jav: 11 Emily Tyrrell 155-01
Women’s Jav: 15 Kim Berg 149-05
Women’s Jav: 18 Lena Suek 141-11
