Montana State Harriers Ink Whitefish Standout

Kuennen will run middle distance/distance and cross country at Montana State.
Last fall, she placed fifth at the Class A cross country championship- leading Whitefish High School to the state title.
“We think Lauren has outstanding potential at the middle distance/distance level,” said MSU head coach Dale Kennedy. “When you start to look at her marks in the 300 hurdles and 400-meters, coupled by her performances in the 800-meters and mile, you start to see the possibilities for cross country and the steeplechase.”
Last weekend, Kuennen finished third in the 800-meters and mile at the Class A state meet in Bozeman as the Bulldogs placed 10th overall under the direction of former MSU standout Bill Brist.
“Lauren has a good blend of speed and endurance,” Kennedy said. “She comes from an outstanding program and she’ll be able to come in and help both the cross country and track squads.”
Kuennen’s career best marks include 300 hurdles (46.95); 400-meters (59.0); 800-meters (2:21); mile (5:18) and two-mile (11:39).
In addition to her efforts on the track, she serves as vice president of the WHS student council. Kuennen is also involved in Big Sisters and REACH.
“Another reason why we were attracted to Lauren is her ability in the classroom,” Kennedy said. “In addition, she has done a lot of volunteer work and she’ll fit in very nicely with our athletic department’s mission.”
Kuennen is the fourth distance runner signed by Kennedy this year.
