Bobcats Head to Big Sky Championships

Sprinter Dan Johnson and a strong group of throwers lead Montana State into the 2008 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday in Sacramento.
Johnson is second in the Big Sky in the 400 meters entering this weekend's competition and eighth in the 200. The junior from Livingston won the league's indoor 400 meter title in 2007.
"Dan is pretty motivated and ready to go this weekend," said MSU coach Dale Kennedy. "He's been running well since he's come back (from injury)."
While Johnson and freshman long jumper Asa Stevens, who leads the league in that event, enter the meet as potential point-scorers, the Bobcats are anchored by the normal group.
Bobcat women lead the Big Sky in three of the four throwing events. Kris Schaffer (shot put), Karen Helvey (discus) and Kim Berg (javelin) each enter the championship meet as favorites in their events. Allison Jones is second in the women's hammer. On the men's side, Nick Lam leads the javelin and Nathan Palmer is third in the hammer throw.
"Our throwers are really performing well," Kennedy said. "They're go into the meet throwing at a very high level. It will be exciting to see how things go this weekend."
The Bobcats enter the meet in the middle of the pack on both sides. Conference coaches picked both MSU's men and women sixth, a pair of marks Kennedy thinks the 'Cats can top. "Weber State, Northern Arizona and Sacramento State are so strong on both sides, I'm not sure anyone but those three will be serious contenders. But we have the chance to do a lot better than we were projected. That's certainly what we're shooting for."
