MSU Tennis Standout to Direct MSU Play

And, on April 11 at 7 p.m., she’ll finally get a chance to give the orders.
Proietti, a senior from Merced, Calif., will direct ‘Five Women Wearing the Same Dress,’ April 11-12, 18-19 in MSU’s Black Box Theatre. The play was written by Alan Ball, whose previous work has included American Beauty and Six Feet Under.
“The story on the surface is very easily recognizable,” Proietti said. “It’s about five bridesmaids during a wedding reception, and takes place in one of the bridesmaid’s bedrooms, who happens to be the sister of the bride.
“It’s a story about their day,” she added. “Within that unfolds a lot of issues and stories that are very personal to each character and it touches on a lot of social and human issues.”
During her formative years, Proietti grew up with a love for the theatre and athletics. She performed in numerous plays as a kid.
Proietti also found success on the basketball and tennis courts.
Originally recruited to play for the Bobcat women’s basketball team, Proietti switched sports, and has been a member of the MSU tennis team the past two seasons.
And, as part of her academic requirements, Proietti had to pitch to the faculty an idea to produce either a play or film. Only a limited number actually get chosen to come to fruition.
Proietti was the only one picked to produce a play.
An avid reader, she heard about ‘Five Women Wearing the Same Dress’ from her mother.
“After reading the story, I really enjoyed it,” Proietti said. “There were certain chords within it that struck at me, and I knew this was the one.”
The past few months have been overwhelming at times, but with the help of stage manager Lily Williams, the duo is looking forward to opening night.
During the difficult times directing and producing, Proietti has fallen back on attributes she noticed in former and current coaches.
“This has been such a huge undertaking and I catch myself being parts of different coaches that I’ve had,’ Proietti said. “It’s made me a bit more sensitive and in-tune to people’s needs because I know what it feels like to be on the other side.
“I do, in a way, feel like a coach,” she added. “Just trying to keep the morale up, but trying to get what you need, and juggling all the different factors. The aspect of live theatre is like a sporting event. You need to be prepared and have a game plan, and be able to deal with the unexpected.”
Ultimately, Proietti would like to direct big productions and end up on Broadway.
For now, she just wants to gain experiences.
“The new facility is so cool,” Proietti said. “I grew up in the theatre and in that type of space (black box) and that’s what I want to do after I graduate.”
