Peter Fields knows that National Student-Athlete Day isn't circled on a lot of calendars, but it is on his.
"We have so many kids that are doing the right things, that compete hard and excel in the classroom and are involved in so many positive things on campus and in the community," Fields said on Sunday, National Student-Athlete Day. "We have a lot to be proud of."
Fields lauded MSU's 300-plus student-athletes on Sunday, citing MSU Athletics' 15 straight semesters with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or better. He also cited the department's cumulative community service hours, which nears 10,000 in the past two years.
In the past few weeks, female student-athletes became the centerpiece of MSU's annual student-achievement awards. Montana State's women's basketball team stands among the top five nationally in cumulative grade point average, as well. A Bobcat football player, Ty McDonald, is the campus' reigning Torleif Aasheim Award Winner, presented to an MSU senior who excels in the community as well as the classroom.
