Bobcat Tennis Teams Set for Big Sky Championships

The Montana State men’s and women’s tennis teams will compete in the Big Sky Conference championships this weekend hosted by Sacramento State. The Bobcat women will open on Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. (MST). MSU enters as the No. 3 seed and will face No. 6 Northern Colorado. The other first-round match has No. 4 Montana facing No. 5 Eastern Washington. The MSU men’s squad will also begin play on Friday. The Bobcats are the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 Northern Arizona at 3 p.m. (MST). The other opening round match has No. 3 Weber State meeting No. 6 Montana. On the women’s side, Sacramento State and Northern Arizona hold the top seeds, while the Hornets and Eastern Washington are the top squads in the men’s bracket. Semifinals matches will be played on Saturday, with the women’s championship on Sunday at 11 a.m., followed by the men’s title tilt at 3 p.m. The championship will be held at the Gold River Racquet Club in Gold River, Calif.
The Bobcat Women:
The Montana State women’s tennis squad enters as one of the hottest teams in the Big Sky. Montana State is on a four-match winning streak, and they’ve posted five straight league wins. MSU is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in BSC play. This season, Montana State has been paced by freshman Stephanie Jasper. Playing at No. 1 singles, the Bozeman native is 16-3 overall and 12-3 in dual action. She is followed in the line-up by Nuria Hernandez, Laura Villegas, Ali Griffin, Remy Clark and McKenzie Hilmer. Villegas, a sophomore from Cota, Columbia, has an 18-2 overall ledger and a 13-2 mark at No. 3 singles. Jasper and Villegas each registered a 7-1 record in Big Sky action. The duo has also combined to be MSU’s top doubles tandem.
The Bobcat Men:
Montana State continues to be one of the dominant programs in the Big Sky Conference, winning league titles in 2000, 2004, 2005 and 2006. This spring, senior Kyle McDonald has paced the squad notching a 16-5 mark at No. 1 singles. McDonald, a native of Casper, Wyo., has tallied a four-year mark of 71-40. He is followed in the line-up by Jakub Dybala, Pawel Turzanski, Fletcher Keyes, Justin Hauck, Esteban Ferrero, Myles Perkins and David Kovas. Keyes, a freshman from Park City, Utah has MSU’s second best mark with a 15-8 record, which includes a 7-1 showing in Big Sky action. The Bobcats are currently 12-11 overall and finished Big Sky play with a 5-3 slate.
The Head Coaches:
Both Montana State head coaches, Mike Phillips and Denise Albrecht, are in their 8th year at MSU. Both have garnered Big Sky Coach of the Year honors during their tenure at Montana State.
