Smith Finishes Tenth at Big Sky Golf Championship

Smith’s 230 for three rounds was two strokes over Bobcat Kelly Gillum’s 2007 tenth place finish at the same event. Gillum redshirted this season due to a shoulder surgery. Senior Stephanie Simmons tied a season-high round of 74 to finish in a tie for 22nd place. Junior Hilary Folkvord shaved 13 strokes off her first round score to finish the tourney with a round of 76.
Portland State surprised the field by taking the conference championship by two stokes over favorite Northern Arizona and three strokes ahead of third place Eastern Washington. The medalist for the tournament was Viking’s Hannah Bews who shot a four-over par 220 for the event. Northern Arizona’s Ali Carter finished second. Bews, a sophomore from England, trailed Carter by two strokes going into today’s final round. Sacramento State was the defending champion.
Carissa Simmons, younger sister of MSU’s Stephanie Simmons, placed third in individual scoring after shooting a sluggish 81 on day one. Simmons, a freshman from Montana, finished two-under par on the last two rounds.
“The weather was perfect and the girls had good rhythms going all day,” head coach Leslie Spalding said. “There was some good golf played out there today all the way around.”
