Bobcats Scrimmage in Perfect Conditions

Even Sunday's near-perfect spring weather couldn't top the fact that Rob Ash's Bobcat football team was able to practice outdoors three straight days. The team's sharp performance on both sides of the ball in the team's first spring scrimmage, and the weather, only punctuated the weekend.
"There were a few penalties early on that slowed us down and got us out of sync," Ash said, "but I liked the basic execution I saw out there. The intensity was good."
Much of the 80-play scrimmage consisted of third-and-short and red-zone situations, focuses during spring camp. Ash was pleased with what he saw. "We have to get better in the red zone, and we have to understand how critical the red zone is. We're really working the first part of that red zone package, from the 15 to the 10 and from the 10 to the five, along with the field goals, which we know we need to work on."
Ash lauded the three quarterbacks in competition for starting honors at that position. "I thought the quarterbacks did OK. They threw the ball accurately and they were pretty quick on their delivery, getting the ball out against pressure. I thought they were pretty consistent."
While the offense performed well, Ash also liked the play of his team's defense. "I thought the defense rose up nicely on third-and-short situations, and they were very physical in there. It was good."
The most successful part of Sunday's scrimmage was the conditions that allowed it to be played, after a start-and-stop first half of spring drills that has been plagued by wet spring weather. "The guys love to play the game," Ash said. "It was good to have them out there. I thought the intensity stayed focused throughout.
