Smith Takes Fifth at Conference Preview

The conference held an 18-hole preview event at the course in Phoenix to give the teams a chance to practice on the host course. The ‘Cats soon found the course to be a challenge.
“They’ve got it playing really long right now, too long,” head MSU coach Leslie Spalding said. ”Add to that a two-club headwind on the first three holes and a tail wind on the back and that makes it a stretch.”
Coming off a season-best on Monday and Tuesday at the Cowgirl Invite in Chandler, Arizona, junior LaRae Smith tackled the challenge head on shooting a team low 78 and placing fifth in the event. Coach Spalding praised Smith’s play in spite of all the challenges.
“Her (Smith) strength is that she is back to her fiery self of being consistently on,” Spalding said. “She hits her fairway woods well and her short game is good. It’s exciting to watch.”
Northern Arizona's Ali Carter won the preview with a 75. NAU also had the lowest team score at 314. MSU placed seventh with a 329.
Senior Kate Steffanich continues to suffer from the flu and did not play leaving only four scoring players for the ‘Cats. The conference meet is April 21-23.
