Montana State (16-12, 11-5) locked-up the No. 3 seed at next week’s Big Sky Conference tournament and will face Northern Arizona in the opening-round on Thursday evening in Missoula.
MSU’s 11 league victories surpasses last year’s mark of 8-8. The Bobcats are also riding a four-game win streak, including three consecutive on the road.
“Heading into the season we set a goal of finishing in the top three,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “We met that goal. Now, we’ll set some new ones.”
Garcia, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico connected on 7-of-13 from the field and added four rebounds and four steals.
Also in double-figures for the Bobcats were Krislyn Wallace 12, and Anne Phippard 10.
Phippard, who helped fill the vacancy left by Mercer, had one of her best games of the season, hitting two 3-pointers and converting four-of-four free throws- all in the second half. . In addition, she added three assists and two rebounds.
“Anne gave us a huge lift, especially in the second half,” Binford said. “For a kid, who has seen limited playing time, to step up when we need her is a testament to her character and says a lot about the depth of our team.”
Montana State broke away from a 52-49 advantage with 6:09 remaining with an 11-1 run to take a 63-50 lead with 1:54 left. Five different Bobcat players scored during the run.
The Bobcats finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field, including 52 percent in the second stanza. MSU also connected on 15-of-18 free throws.
For the second straight game, the Bobcats were paced under the boards by point-guard Erica Perry. Perry also added six points, seven steals and five assists.
Eastern Washington (4-25, 1-15) was led by Julie Piper with 17 points and five rebounds.
