With the victory, Montana State (15-12, 10-5) pulled into a tie for third place with the Vikings. MSU holds the tie-breaker with Portland State (20-8, 10-5) by virtue of its season sweep.
A Montana State victory or a Portland State loss on Saturday would ensure MSU a No. 3 seed heading into the Big Sky Conference tournament next week.
MSU senior Krislyn Wallace led the Bobcats with a team-high 23 points, including a 10-14 effort from the field. Also in double-digits were Jenny Heringer 17, and Rebecca Mercer 11.
“It was a hard-fought battle on both ends,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “To pull-out a win like this when we weren’t shooting well is a big step for us. We hit some clutch baskets down the stretch.”
Aside from Wallace’s night shooting the ball, the Bobcats struggled to find its offensive flow. MSU shot just 30 percent in the first stanza, and finished the game hitting 38 percent from the field.
Rebecca Mercer, MSU’s leading scorer, shot four-of-16 from the field, but drained a three-pointer with 1:17 remaining to give the Bobcats a 68-65 advantage.
PSU’s Claire Faucher answered with a trey to knot the score at 68-all with 1:03 left.
Montana State then scored four unanswered points on a Heringer basket and two Perry free throws to secure the win.
Perry, a 5-5 native of Lynwood, Calif., finished with nine points, a career-high 12 rebounds and seven assists.
“Erica Perry does so many things for us, and she really stepped-up and hit the free throws when we needed them the most,” Binford said. “The thing I love about this team is that anyone can step-up- either offensively or defensively.”
The Bobcats held a commanding 51-37 advantage under the boards, paced by Perry 12, and Wallace with nine.
Portland State was led by Kelli Valentine with 23 points and nine rebounds.
MSU will close out its regular-season slate at Eastern Washington on Saturday afternoon.
