Track and Field Announces Indoor Team Awards

The Outstanding Female Field Event Performer recognition went to pole vaulter Ellie Rudy. Rudy, who will likely redshirt the outdoor season this year to prepare for the Olympic trials currently is tied for the best collegiate vault in the country at 14’1.25” going into the NCAA indoor championships in two weeks. This season, Rudy broke many records including the Big Sky conference indoor meet record, which she previously held at 14’0”. She also set a record for number of conference weekly athlete of the week honors in any sport, currently at 20. Rudy holds the MSU women’s pole vault record at 14’2.5”, a mark she set at the 2007 Tom Gage Classic here in Bozeman. Rudy is one of only three women pole vaulters nationally who have automatic bids to the NCAA championships.
The Outstanding Male Field Event Performer went to freshman Asa Staven of Georgetown, Texas. Staven placed fifth at this year’s BSC indoor in the heptathlon, an event he led after the first day of competition. He also placed fifth in the long jump at the same meet, and eighth in the high jump event. Three of his lifetime best marks were achieved at the conference meet in the heptathlon event including long jump (23’8.25”), pole vault (13’1.5”), and high jump (6’9.75”).
Outstanding Female Track Performer went to senior Elisabeth Driscoll. She placed third in the 5000 at this year’s conference championships at 17:19.02. Driscoll also achieved a personal best in the 3000 this indoor season at 10:01.31. She achieved First Team All-
Conference honors in track and is a three-time all conference selection in cross country as well.
Senior Dan Johnson was honored as the Outstanding Male Track Performer. Johnson broke the school 400 mark four times this season and currently sits eighth in the nation in the 400. He also set a school record in the 200 three times this year with his best at 21.45. Johnson received all-conference recognition for placing second at the conference indoor meet in the 200. He missed setting the school record in the 55 this year by .01 with a best of 6.37.
Most Improved Male Performer of the year was a tie between sophomore distance runner Nick Atwood and senior Dan Johnson. Atwood finished second in the conference indoor in the 5000 and fourth in the 3000, running personal best marks in both. He also set a personal record in the mile at the conference meet. Atwood cut 17 seconds off his 3000 time during the indoor season. Senior Dan Johnson improved all his sprint marks this season. Johnson’s best 400 mark in 2007 was 47.74, compared to a 46.68 at present. He trimmed close to a half-second off his 200 time from 2007 as well.
The Most Improved Female Athlete of the indoor season was also a tie between junior pole vaulter Amy Plummer and sophomore thrower Alli Jones. Plummer added over a foot to last year’s best with a current high mark of 12’0.5”. She finished in a three-way tie for fifth at the BSC indoor meet this season. Jones finished sixth in the weight throw and fourth in the shot put at the conference meet last weekend. Her season best mark of 57’4.25” exceeds her 2007 mark by almost three feet. This year’s shot put best (46’10.75”) is almost a foot over her 2007 best mark.
Outstanding Freshman awards went to Staven for the men and pole vaulter Stacey Irvine for the women. Irvine finished second in the pole vault at the Big Sky meet this season with a jump of 12’5.5”. That mark put her tenth on the MSU Top Ten list in women’s pole vault. Irvine hails from Telkwa, British Columbia.
