Montana State Women’s Tennis Team Clips Eagles

Montana State (6-4, 2-2) dropped the opening doubles point, losing at Nos. 1 and 3. MSU’s lone victory came at No. 2 doubles, where the tandem of Stephanie Jasper and Laura Villegas combined for an 8-6 win over EWU’s Amanda Demerath and Sarah Leuenberger.
“We didn’t come out with enough spark and focus, and Eastern Washington got the better of us in doubles play,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “Before singles started, we got together and they were challenged to step-up their play.”
Sophomore Laura Villegas continued her hot streak, posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to tie the match at one-all. With the win, Villegas improved to 9-1 on the season.
Senior Katy Proietti followed with a straight set victory over Amanda Mankovits at No. 4, before MSU’s Stephanie Jasper rallied for a hard-fought 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(2) win at the top spot to give the Bobcats a 3-1 advantage.
Eastern Washington’s Kerstyn Dolack closed the margin to 3-2 with a three set win over Nuria Hernandez at No. 2.
Montana State sophomore Ali Griffin secured the match for the Bobcats with a 6-2, 6-2 victory No. 5 singles over Marcie Demerath.
“I really liked the way our kids battled this weekend,” Albrecht said. “Sacramento State and Eastern Washington are two quality teams.”
Montana State will play at Portland State on April 11.
