No. 46 Sacramento State Holds off Bobcat Challenge

Montana State (5-4, 1-2) opened the match with a win at No. 1 doubles, where Ali Griffin and Allison Fey downed Melissa Valenzuela and Joyce Martinez 8-6. The Hornets claimed No. 3 doubles. The Bobcats held a 5-2 advantage at No. 2 doubles, before Sacramento State’s Luba Schifris and Karina Jarlkeganova rallied for an 8-5 win.
“I thought we played tough doubles,” said MSU women’s coach Denise Albrecht. “We got a lead at No. 2, but then got a little jittery. I’m proud of the way our kids battled.”
The top three singles spots featured hard-fought matches.
Valenzuela held on for a 6-4, 7-6(4) win over Stephanie Jasper at No. 1 singles, and Schifris captured a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Nuria Hernandez at No. 2.
MSU’s lone singles victory came at No. 3, where sophomore Laura Villegas posted a 6-2, 7-5 win over Jarlkeganova. Villegas held a 5-2 advantage in the second set, and held of a late charge by Jarlkeganova.
“Sacramento State is No. 46 in the nation, and our kids have nothing to hang their heads about,” Albrecht said. “We had some players hit amazing shots and play some of their best tennis of the season. Laura (Villegas) was outstanding. She battled the whole way and withstood a momentum switch.”
Sacramento State claimed Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles, dropping only six total games.
Montana State will conclude its home slate on Sunday at 9 a.m. with Senior Day.
