Bobcat Men’s Tennis Team Defeats Grizzlies

MSU completed weekend play with a 2-1 record. The Bobcats are 7-10 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky Conference action.
Montana State opened the day sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the first point.
The doubles play was highlighted by MSU’s win at No. 1 singles, where Kyle McDonald and Jakub Dybala earned an 8-5 decision over UM’s Colin Dectar and Alexandre Gorj. The Bobcat duo has won six consecutive matches and 13 of 15 on the season.
The Bobcats opened singles play winning at Nos. 1 and 2 to take a 3-0 advantage behind the play of McDonald and Dybala.
“Kyle and Jakub had an outstanding match, helping to account for three points,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “After that it got pretty tense, but we relied on our senior and he delivered.”
The Grizzlies got back into the match, winning hard-fought three set decisions at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. UM’s Gorj then posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Esteban Ferrero at No. 6 to knot the score at 3-all.
Bobcat senior Justin Hauck cruised to a first set 6-1 win over David Cysneiros at No. 5 singles, and held a 5-2 margin in the second stanza. Cysneiros got back on serve at 5-4, before Hauck close out the match with a 6-4 win.
“I was really happy with the way we competed,” Phillips said. “After our match against Sacramento State, it was nice to see the guys fight back. Montana is a very good team, and this was a solid Big Sky win,”
Montana State will play at Northern Arizona next weekend in Flagstaff.
