“It certainly was a doable situation for us, but honestly, we didn’t compete hard enough to get the win,” said MSU head coach Mike Phillips. “The top of Sacramento State’s line-up is very tough. This match showed how wide-open the Big Sky is this season.”
Sacramento State claimed the opening point, winning two-of-three doubles matches. MSU’s lone win came at No. 1 where Kyle McDonald and Jakub Dybala upended Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk 8-4.
The Hornets then claimed No. 2 singles, before Bobcat freshman Fletcher Keyes posted a 6-1, 6-4 win over Holden Ching at No. 4 singles. Sacramento State secured the match with victories at Nos. 1 and 3 singles.
Montana State received its final point at No. 6 singles, where Esteban Ferrero notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ronan Conlon.
MSU will host intra-state rival Montana on Sunday at 10 a.m.
