Smith’s opening round score of 79 was her first sub-80 round of the season.
Host Northern Arizona’s Sophia Choi placed second in the meet with a 151 (77-74), just one stroke behind medalist Catherine Fortin of Eastern Michigan. Northern Arizona topped all seven Big Sky schools at the event with a third place finish. MSU placed 12th of 14.
“We just couldn’t get our game going,” head MSU coach Leslie Spalding said. “It was disappointing.”
The Bobcats travel to Hawaii in two weeks for the Dennis Thompson Invite March 17-18
