Bobcats’ Dance Comes to an End

After upsetting Idaho State in the semifinals and defeating a scrappy Northern Arizona squad on Thursday, the Bobcats ran out of gas.
“I’m taking nothing away from the Griz. They shot lights-out,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “I think our tanks were empty. With all the adversity we had to overcome this season, three nights really took a toll.”
Montana State (18-13) jumped out to an early 11-3 lead following a Jenny Heringer field-goal, and it looked like the Bobcats might have enough fumes left to get to the finish line.
However, Montana (25-6) connected on six consecutive three-pointers to blow the game open. The Lady Griz held a 49-31 advantage at intermission.
Montana State was paced in the loss by Krislyn Wallace, who notched her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. For her efforts, she was named to the Big Sky Conference All-Tournament team.
Also gaining league kudos was sophomore point-guard Erica Perry, who finished with 11 points, five assists and two steals.
Senior Rebecca Mercer also hit double-digits with 11 points, giving her 24 straight double-figure scoring games.
“I’m proud of the way this team came together,” Binford said. “Midway through the Big Sky season they really started believing in themselves and they gained a lot of confidence. They became tough competitors.”
With the loss, MSU ends the 2007-08 campaign with 18 victories- five more than last season, and six times the amount Binford won in her first winter at Montana State, just three short years ago.
“We made big steps, significant steps this season,” Binford said. “To get to this game is an incredible achievement. However, I’m sad that our three seniors won’t be with us next year as we look to take even more strides forward.”
Season Notes: MSU’s loss to Montana was the sixth time the Bobcats have finished second at the Big Sky Tournament.
