The Montana State men's tennis team wrapped up its longest road trip of the season Friday with a 4-3 loss at Loyola Marymount. In spite of its second straight 4-3 loss, MSU coach Mike Phillips is pleased with his team's improvement.
"Those were tough losses," Phillips said, "but I'm happy with how the team is improving and competing. This was good experience heading into conference matches."
MSU began its extended road trip with a 4-3 win at Utah State on March 6, then lost at national power BYU (6-1) and Utah (7-0) the next two days. After traveling to California, MSU dropped a 6-1 decision to #72 Central Florida on March 11 and at UC Riverside 4-3 on March 13 before the LMU match.
Bobcat senior Kyle McDonald continued his red hot play on Saturday, defeating Jason Twarowski 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 and teaming with Jakub Dybala to win their doubles match. "Jakub continues to play well and regain his confidence from last year," Phillips said, "but Kyle McDonald is the real story. He's won 20 of his last 22 matches, which is phenomenal."
Montana State returns home next weekend for the first time in three weeks, hosting Montana and Sacramento State. The Bobcats stand 4-9 on the season.
