He clocked a 47.44 to finish third in his heat, with a time that ranked him 12th going into the final. Only eight runners made the finals which will take place Saturday afternoon.
MSU head coach Dale Kennedy said Johnson completed the first half of his race in good speed but got boxed in by other runners and couldn’t break through when he needed to. None of the runners in Johnson’s heat made the finals including the runner rated number one in the nation going into the event.
Ellie Rudy will try to defend her national pole vault title late Saturday afternoon.
