Montana State (17-12) converted 12-of-13 free throws in the final 4:04 to help secure the win, including a six-of-six effort from Erica Perry.
“We hoped to get settled a little sooner than we did,” said MSU head coach Tricia Binford. “However, when it came time to step-up down the stretch, our kids came through. They’ve gained a lot of confidence, in the past few weeks, that they can get the job done when it counts most.”
In all, five Bobcats reached double-figures as Sarah Strand posted 13, Erica Perry 12 and Jenny Heringer 11. MSU finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field and 89 percent (23-26) from the line.
The Bobcats built a 13-point cushion at the 4:17 mark of the first stanza, before the Lumberjacks cut the margin to 42-36 at intermission. MSU was paced in the half by Wallace with 12 points, while Mercer added ten points, including a pair of 3-pointers.
MSU gave up 13 offensive boards in the opening period, as Northern Arizona’s (10-20) Laura Dinkins collected eight to pace the Lumberjacks. Dinkins had 15 points in the first half.
Dinkins, a 5-11 senior from Rialto, Calif., finished with 28 points and 14 rebounds.
“Northern Arizona came out aggressive and really hit the offensive boards,” Binford said. “We had no answer for Laura Dinkins.
“But give credit to our kids for getting the stops and hitting their shots.”
The Bobcats took a 46-38 lead at the 18:45 mark on a Strand jumper early in the second stanza.
NAU battled back with a 13-2 to run to stake a 51-48 lead with 14:25 left.
The second half featured nine ties and ten lead changes. NAU’s last lead came with 3:38 remaining following a Dinkins jumper.
The game was tied twice, down the stretch, before a pair of Strand free throws with 31-seconds left gave the Bobcats the lead for good.
With 22-seconds remaining, Perry converted six-of-six free throws to ice the game.
Perry, a 5-5 guard from Lynwood, Calif., added six assists and four steals.
NAU held a 47-35 advantage under the boards. The Bobcats were paced by Wallace with nine and Nubia Garcia with eight rebounds.
“It doesn’t matter if you win by one or forty (points),” Binford said. “The fact is that we’re moving on and that’s something we haven’t done since I’ve been at Montana State.”
Montana State will meet No. 2 Idaho State, Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in Dahlberg Arena.
