Bobcat Women’s Tennis Squad Opens Season with Big Sky Conference Victory

The Bobcats also defeated Sam Houston State, 6-1, in its second match of the day.
“We had a few jitters entering the match, but once we settled down and focused on the task at hand, the girls played some outstanding tennis,” said MSU eighth-year head coach Denise Albrecht. “Northern Colorado is a very solid squad, and the 7-0 score is not indicative of the caliber of play.”
MSU opened the match earning the doubles point, winning all three ladder positions. Montana State’s No. 1 duo of Stephanie Jasper and Katy Proietti rallied from a 7-4 deficit to post an 8-7 win.
Laura Villegas and Ali Griffin were solid at the No. 2 spot, recording an 8-1 win, while Nuria Hernandez and McKenzie Hilmer combined for an 8-6 victory at No. 3 over Tiffany Knop and Jodi Ciarvella to secure a 1-0 advantage heading into singles.
“You’re always a little bit unsure of the double pairings, especially the first match of the year,” Albrecht said. “However, I thought we communicated very well and had some inspired play.”
Senior Nuria Hernandez was the first Bobcat to post a singles win with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Tiffany Knop at the No. 2 spot. Jasper, a freshman from Bozeman, claimed No. 1 singles with a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 decision over Tabatha Knop to give MSU a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Laura Villegas won a three-set 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 decision over Manuela Santos at No. 3 singles to give the Bobcats the match.
Katy Proietti, Ali Griffin and Remy Clark won in straight sets at Nos. 4, 5, and 6, respectively to complete the sweep.
