MSU's Staven Leads Hep Event at Big Sky Championships

Staven won both the long jump (23’8.25”) and high jump (6’9.75”), placed second in the 60 meter dash (7.31), and eighth in the shot put (34’9”) to lead the field of 14 competitors. The heptathlon concludes on Saturday with the pole vault, 60 meter dash and 1000 meter run. Staven’s point total of 3040 beats the second place total of 2867 held by Nick Trubachik of Portland State.
Montana State men sit in fifth place after the first day of events with 23 points. MSU’s Nick Atwood placed second in the 5000 meter run with a time of 14:44.08. Nick Morrow placed fourth in the pole vault at 15’11.75. Staven, in addition to leading the heptathlon, placed fifth in the men’s long jump with a leap of 23’5.5”, a lifetime best. Senior Nathan Palmer placed fifth in the weight throw at 56’9.5” Weber State’s men hold the lead with 43 points.
MSU women are in seventh place with 15 points after day one of events at the Holt Arena. Sophomore Allison Jones placed third in the shot put with a toss of 46’7.5” Senior Elisabeth Driscoll placed third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 17:41.77, while teammate Caroline Gottschalk placed eighth in the same event with a time of 18:41.67. Host Idaho State leads with 54 points.
Sprinter Dan Johnson qualified for the Saturday finals in both the 200 and 400. Also qualifying for Saturday’s track events on the men’s side was Ben Soukup in the 60 meter hurdles.
Qualifying for tomorrow’s track events on the women’s side were Toni Qunell (60 meter dash) and Amanda DeHaan (200 meter dash, 60 meter hurdles).
